UN Official Warns Disruption in Fertilizer Supplies Threatens Global Food Security

New york: A United Nations official has warned of the possibility of a widespread humanitarian crisis if an urgent solution is not found to ensure the continued flow of fertilizers and related raw materials through the Strait of Hormuz, as the planting season begins in different parts of the world.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), stated that one-third of all fertilizers in the world transit through the Strait of Hormuz. The ongoing disruption has impacted the entire supply chain of fertilizers, raising concerns about global food security.

da Silva emphasized the need for a task force to develop a mechanism focused on fertilizers and related raw materials such as urea, sulphur, and ammonia to prevent a massive humanitarian crisis. He highlighted that the UN is actively working on creating a safe corridor for the transit of essential goods and fertilizers. The primary goal is to avoid a humanitarian crisis and to ensure that the most vulnerable populations have access to food and necessary resources.
