MANAMA: The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Manama reported receiving 12 complaints within its jurisdiction during the last third of 2024, leading to multiple legal actions and disciplinary measures against members of the Public Security Forces. The SIU's investigations have resulted in significant developments, including a prison sentence and several referrals to military courts.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Mohammed Khalid Al Hazza, Acting Attorney-General and Chief of the SIU, provided details on the unit's activities during this period. The SIU took statements from 25 complainants and witnesses and interrogated 20 members of the Public Security Forces. Seven complainants were also referred to forensic and psychological support as part of the investigations.
One significant outcome was the prosecution of a Public Security Forces member following a social media complaint. The Minor Criminal Court sentenced the individual to six months in prison on November 13, 2024, a decision later upheld by the Appeals Court. In addition, two other cases resulted in the confirmation of allegations, leading to the referral of two Public Security Forces members to the Military Courts Directorate for disciplinary action. Disciplinary measures were also enforced against two additional members previously referred to the Military Courts Directorate.
On December 10, 2024, the SIU, in partnership with the UN Development Programme, organized a session to coincide with Human Rights Day and the 40th anniversary of the UN Convention Against Torture. This session emphasized Bahrain's human rights initiatives, legislative progress, and future strategies, attracting 60 participants from law enforcement and civil society.
