Northern Municipality Grants Food Trucks Six-Month Compliance Period Under Urban Enhancement Campaign

Manama: Food truck operators in Bahrain have been granted a six-month grace period to regularise their operations and comply with licensing and regulatory requirements under a nationwide campaign aimed at improving urban standards, public safety, and regulatory compliance.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Mohammed Saad Al Sahli, Director General of the Northern Municipality and Coordinator of the Food Truck Regulation Project, announced that the grace period will run from June 21 to December 21, 2026. This period allows existing licence holders time to complete the necessary procedures and obtain any outstanding approvals required under current regulations.

He explained that the initiative is part of a coordinated effort by relevant government authorities to strengthen oversight of the sector, address urban and planning violations, and ensure food truck operations comply with health, municipal, and safety standards. Al Sahli highlighted that the campaign follows complaints and observations received by authorities regarding unauthorised structures and other practices at some food truck sites that have affected the appearance and organisation of public spaces.

Al Sahli stressed that the grace period applies only to existing operators, while new applicants will be required to secure all approvals and meet regulatory requirements before licences are issued. The campaign is intended to support the sustainable growth of the food truck sector by ensuring businesses operate within a clear legal framework, benefit from approved locations, and maintain consumer confidence through full regulatory compliance.

He emphasised that no new fees will be introduced as part of the process, with operators only required to complete existing licensing and approval procedures stipulated under current regulations. Additionally, authorities have identified a number of unlicensed permanent structures linked to food trucks, including fences, seating areas, and other additions erected without the necessary approvals. Operators will be given the opportunity to rectify such violations during the grace period.

Government entities involved in the campaign will also provide guidance and awareness support to help operators meet the required standards and complete the regularisation process. Al Sahli stated that legal measures will be taken against non-compliant structures after the grace period expires, including the removal of unauthorised installations, while licensed food trucks that meet all requirements will be allowed to continue operating in accordance with approved regulations.

He urged food truck operators to make use of the grace period to complete the necessary procedures, helping to enhance the sector's sustainability, improve public safety, and preserve the urban landscape across the Kingdom.
