Manama: Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, announced the inauguration of the passenger sea route between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the State of Qatar. This project is the result of comprehensive development led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The initiative aims to advance the transport system and enhance joint Gulf cooperation.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the inaugural voyage of the passenger sea route departed from Saadah Marina in Muharraq Island, heading to Al Ruwais Port in Qatar. Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed was welcomed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Thani, Minister of Transport of the State of Qatar, along with senior officials, in a celebratory atmosphere reflecting the longstanding relations between the two countries.
The Transportation Minister highlighted that this strategic project paves the way for expanding maritime passenger transport between Bahrain and the GCC states. It facilitates the movement of citizens, residents, and visitors, supports tourism and cultural exchange, and strengthens social ties between the two peoples. This route represents the first international passenger sea link between two Gulf countries.
Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed added that the launch of the sea route represents a qualitative investment in the marine tourism sector and contributes to the national economy. The ministry is working to develop an integrated maritime passenger transport system connecting Bahrain with neighbouring countries, adhering to the highest safety and sustainability standards. This aligns with Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030, which is based on sustainability, competitiveness, and fairness.
The minister also commended General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, for his support in facilitating the project implementation according to safety and security standards. This cooperation between the ministries reflects the government integration approach that supports development plans and strengthens Bahrain's regional position in the maritime transport sector.
Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed expressed appreciation to the Qatari Transport Minister and relevant authorities in Qatar for their cooperation in this joint project. The new sea route reinforces the bonds of connection and integration between the two countries.
Hussain Mohammed Al Qaseer, Chairman of Masar Group, noted that the launch aligns with the vision of Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company to support national projects aimed at developing transport and tourism infrastructure. Masar Group, a subsidiary of Mumtalakat, will operate the sea trips as part of its commitment to supporting the national economy and diversifying the economic base.
Yousif Khalifa Al Mannai, CEO of Masar Group, stated that the group is proud to operate the new sea route. Journeys between Saadah Marina and Al Ruwais Port will take around 70 minutes and can be booked through the MASAR electronic application, offering ease and flexibility for travellers. The group's commitment is to provide a safe and comfortable sea travel experience adhering to the highest standards of quality and safety.
The inauguration of this passenger sea route represents a qualitative leap in Gulf maritime connectivity. It reflects Bahrain's commitment to enhance regional cooperation and facilitate sea travel, contributing to easier movement within the GCC countries and supporting the development of marine tourism in the region.
