DANAT, MIT Advance Pearl Testing Innovation with Joint AI Patent Application

Manama: The Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT) has filed a joint patent application with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for new pearl identification methods that apply artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to gemological testing.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the filing marks a major milestone in the research partnership established between DANAT and MIT in 2022. What began as an ambitious scientific collaboration to study pearls at the nanoscale has now developed into applied innovation with the potential to support more advanced, data-driven approaches to pearl analysis.

The research has focused on understanding the fine structural, optical, morphological, and chemical features that shape a pearl's identity. These characteristics may help specialists better assess how a pearl was formed, where it may have originated, and which features are unique to an individual pearl. The project has also explored how machine learning can support pearl classification and how distinct identifiers may be linked to individual pearls.

The patent application comes as the global pearl sector faces increasingly complex challenges. Developments in culturing techniques and production practices have made pearl identification more demanding, particularly when distinguishing between natural pearls, cultured pearls, and categories that do not fall neatly into either group. In this context, advanced analytical tools are becoming essential to support accurate laboratory reporting and maintain confidence across the pearl trade.

Noora Jamsheer, Chief Executive Officer of DANAT, stated that this patent application is a significant step in their research collaboration with MIT and reflects how the project has evolved from scientific exploration into practical innovation for the pearl industry. From the outset, the aim has been to respond to the rapid scientific and technical developments taking place in pearl culturing and production, and to ensure that testing methods continue to meet the sector's emerging challenges.

Jamsheer added that bringing artificial intelligence and machine learning into gemological testing creates new possibilities for precision, consistency, and deeper scientific understanding. Through collaboration with one of the world's leading research institutions, DANAT is strengthening its position as a pioneering gemological laboratory and a research-driven institution.
