Kosovo Holds Third Election in 16 Months in Bid to Elect New Head of State

Kosovo: Kosovo headed to the polls for its third general election in 16 months. More than 900 candidates representing 17 political parties and three electoral alliances are participating in the elections, competing for 120 seats in parliament, while the number of registered voters is about 2.1 million voters inside and outside the country.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the snap election became necessary because the previous parliament was unable to elect a new head of state within the required timeframe. This was due to a failure to reach the quorum required by the constitution.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti's left-wing party, Vetevendosje (Self-Determination), remains the clear favourite. The term of office of the previous President, Vjosa Osmani, expired on April 4.

The election of a successor to Osmani also remains the task of the future parliament, requiring the presence of 80 of the 120 lawmakers during the vote. The last vote was held at the end of December, when Kurti was unable to form a government due to the balance of power in the parliament elected in February 2025.
