Transportation Minister Participates in First Global AI Governance Dialogue

Geneva: Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, participated in the first Global AI Governance Dialogue, organised by the United Nations in Geneva. The event gathered ministers, senior officials, decision-makers, and representatives from international organisations, the private sector, and academia to discuss the development of comprehensive and responsible governance frameworks for artificial intelligence (AI).

According to Bahrain News Agency, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed addressed the high-level government session, stating that the Kingdom of Bahrain's progress in information and communications technology (ICT) and digital transformation reflects the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. This vision is further supported by the government's approach, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to advance innovation and digital transformation.

The minister highlighted Bahrain's commitment to expanding the use of AI across various sectors to enhance government services, improve efficiency and quality, and strengthen the Kingdom's position as a regional digital economy hub. He stated that Bahrain views AI as a key driver of economic and social development and emphasised the need for international cooperation and the promotion of transparency, trust, and inclusiveness to ensure its safe and responsible use.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla noted that Bahrain is preparing a national AI strategy to support the responsible adoption of emerging technologies and is investing in digital infrastructure, national talent, and innovation. He also highlighted the Kingdom's adoption of the Gulf framework for AI ethics.

In conclusion, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed reaffirmed Bahrain's commitment to working with the United Nations and international partners to develop a balanced global AI governance framework. This framework aims to support sustainable development through innovation, responsibility, and international cooperation.
