Sustainable Development Ministry and DANAT Highlight Bahrain’s Natural Pearls at HLPF in New York

Amman: The Ministry of Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT), organized a significant event on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). Titled "Natural Pearls as Marine Natural Capital: Traceability, Conservation, and Sustainable Value Chains", the event aimed to underline the importance of natural pearls as a marine resource and their role in sustainable development.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the event gathered experts from the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cornell University, and the Arabian Gulf University (AGU). The focus was on showcasing Bahrain's experience in integrating marine resource preservation, scientific research, and sustainable development through the lens of natural pearls. Noor bint Ali Al Khulaif, the Minister of Sustainable Development and Chief Executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB), delivered the keynote, emphasizing natural pearls as a renewable marine resource that symbolizes Bahraini identity and heritage.

The discussions highlighted Bahrain's pioneering approach in the natural pearl sector, reflecting its historical pearling heritage, scientific research efforts, marine environmental protection, and economic value creation. The event stressed the importance of natural pearls as a renewable resource, supported by scientific documentation and sustainable practices. It also underscored the historical significance of pearls in Bahrain's economy and identity for over 5,000 years, while focusing on scientific research and partnerships in protecting pearl oyster resources.

Noora Jamsheer, CEO of DANAT, elaborated on Bahrain's unique model that amalgamates historical heritage, scientific advancement, and marine environment protection. She asserted that DANAT's participation in the event underscores its efforts to position Bahrain as a global center of excellence for natural pearls and gemstones while supporting international dialogues on sustainable marine resources. Jamsheer highlighted the center's role in advancing scientific knowledge in the pearl and jewellery sector, reinforcing confidence in Bahraini natural pearls, and promoting responsible practices within the global jewellery industry.
