Shura Council Leader Advocates for Good Governance at IPU Assembly

Manama:Jamal Mohamed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council and head of Bahrain's Parliamentary Division delegation, addressed the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The assembly took place in the United Republic of Tanzania from October 5 to 9, focusing on promoting good governance and empowering local communities through inclusivity and access to opportunities.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Fakhro highlighted the reforms led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, which have laid solid foundations for good governance in Bahrain. These reforms emphasize the creation of a state of institutions and law, enhancing public participation, and consolidating comprehensive development.

Fakhro noted that under the leadership of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Bahrain is advancing government practices by boosting efficiency, competitiveness, sustainability, and digital transformation. This progress aims to improve service quality, expand development opportunities, and promote equal opportunities for all.

He emphasized Bahrain's focus on utilizing technology and innovation to enhance government and parliamentary performance. The Kingdom is working on frameworks for artificial intelligence governance to maximize benefits and mitigate risks, ensuring transparency and accountability while keeping people at the center of development.

Fakhro also addressed the complex challenges the world faces, such as armed conflicts and crises, stressing the need for robust governance capable of managing crises and fostering development. He underscored the importance of safeguarding institutions and rebuilding public confidence through collective action.

Moreover, he pointed out the developments in the Gulf and Arab region, highlighting the threats to sovereign states from cross-border attacks and disruptions in international navigation caused by Iranian actions. In response, Bahrain's Parliamentary Division submitted a request to include an emergency item on maritime security in the IPU Assembly agenda, calling for urgent parliamentary action to protect global trade routes.

Fakhro reaffirmed Bahrain's support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He concluded by emphasizing the role of parliaments in advancing national development, stressing the need for evidence-based legislation, efficient oversight, and community participation. Fakhro highlighted the importance of empowering youth, women, and underrepresented groups as a means to ensure national stability and a sustainable democratic future.
