New york: At the request of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the French Republic, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Latvia, and the Hellenic Republic, the United Nations Security Council convened a second emergency session to address concerns regarding the Houthi militia's increasing threats to regional security and stability. The session included participation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Yemen, emphasizing the urgent need to tackle the Houthi militia's actions, which are seen as a threat to both regional and international peace.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Bahrain's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Ruwaie, delivered a statement expressing Bahrain's condemnation of the Houthi militia's escalations. These actions are viewed as a violation of the truce and a severe threat to the security of Yemen and the broader region. The militia has taken control of Mocha and significant portions of Yemen's western coast, as well as the islands of Mayyun, Hanish, and Zuqar in the Red Sea, posing risks to navigation and international waterways.
The developments have exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, forcing many civilians to flee the increasing violence. Al Ruwaie highlighted Bahrain's condemnation of repeated Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes on civilians and infrastructure in regions like Jazan, Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif, resulting in casualties and damage.
Al Ruwaie affirmed Bahrain's solidarity with Saudi Arabia and Yemen's legitimate government, supporting their measures to protect their security and sovereignty against ongoing threats. Despite Security Council condemnations, he noted that the Houthi militia persists in detaining UN staff and disrupting diplomatic and civil society activities.
The ambassador called for more decisive international measures against the Houthi group, arguing for strict enforcement of the arms embargo and enhanced measures to halt the flow of weaponry to the militia. He concluded by reiterating Bahrain's commitment to peace in Yemen, supporting the Yemeni government and the UN Special Envoy's efforts to achieve a sustainable political solution for the country.
