Rashid Al Khalifa Unveils “Inhabited Crate” at Contemporary Istanbul

Istanbul:Bahraini artist Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa presented his monumental artwork "Inhabited Crate" during the 21st edition of Contemporary Istanbul, invited by the International Art Fair Istanbul.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the installation, an open steel grid structure, was set on Tersane Istanbul's historic waterfront, offering views over the Golden Horn. The design allowed visitors to walk through it, experiencing the interplay of shifting light and shadows.

The location, a former shipbuilding site with over four centuries of Ottoman maritime history, linked contemporary art with historical context. Visitors were encouraged to explore the installation, engaging with its movement, light, and spatial dynamics.

Rashid bin Khalifa emphasized the significance of the historic setting, which facilitated a dialogue between the artwork and its surroundings. This interaction explored themes central to his artistic practice, including movement, light, space, and the relationship between people and their environment.

He also noted that his connection to Bahrain plays a crucial role in his work. The country's history, distinctive character, and openness have been a constant presence throughout his artistic journey.

Contemporary Istanbul annually gathers artists, galleries, collectors, and art professionals from across the globe, fostering communication and dialogue in the field of contemporary art.
