Appendectomy for Acute Appendicitis Linked to Reduced Colorectal Cancer Risk

Accra:A recent study has found that patients who underwent surgery for acute appendicitis have a lower risk of developing colorectal cancer compared to those treated with antibiotics alone.

According to Bahrain News Agency, The study analyzed data from 15,774 patients who received an appendectomy and 15,295 who were treated with antibiotics. Results showed that 0.7% of the surgery group developed colorectal cancer, compared to 1.7% of the antibiotic group.

After adjusting for various individual risk factors, the study concluded that appendectomy was associated with a 58% reduction in the risk of colorectal cancer.

Researchers emphasized that these findings do not confirm that removing the appendix directly prevents cancer or that all patients with appendicitis should necessarily undergo surgery. They advocate for further research to explore the connection between appendectomy and reduced cancer risk.
