Amman: Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Ayman Safadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; and Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, held a press conference following the conclusion of the 165th Ordinary Session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Minister Safadi highlighted the consultative meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers, which featured extensive discussions reflecting a shared understanding of the serious challenges facing the region and the need to strengthen collective Arab action. He welcomed the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran and voiced support for continued negotiations toward a comprehensive resolution addressing the causes of regional tensions.
Minister Safadi emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty of Arab states, rejecting interference in their internal affairs, and safeguarding Arab security. He stated that the Palestinian issue remained a central topic of discussion and called for more effective mechanisms to advance joint Arab action.
Dr. Al Zayani expressed appreciation to Jordan for hosting the meeting, identifying it as a valuable opportunity for Arab foreign ministers to exchange views on regional developments and shared challenges, thus helping to strengthen Arab solidarity and coordination. He noted that the ministers welcomed the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, including its provisions for ending military operations and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation, describing it as a crucial step toward enhancing regional peace and stability.
Dr. Al Zayani announced that the ministerial council, acting under the authority delegated by Arab leaders, had approved the appointment of Nabil Fahmy as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, with his term set to begin in July. Arab foreign ministers extended their congratulations and expressed confidence in his leadership of the organization and its efforts to advance joint Arab action.
He further commended outgoing Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit for his dedication over two consecutive terms, promoting Arab solidarity and supporting the League's work during a critical period. Additionally, the council approved the appointment of several Arab League ambassadors to overseas missions.
Dr. Al Zayani stressed that current regional challenges necessitate closer Arab cooperation, coordination, and consultation to strengthen security, stability, and development and meet the aspirations of the region's people. For his part, Aboul Gheit thanked the Arab foreign ministers for their recognition of his decade of service as Secretary-General and reaffirmed that the League of Arab States remains the collective voice of the Arab world and a key platform for coordinating policies and advancing shared interests.
