New york: Jamal Fares Al Ruwaiei, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, participated in a United Nations Security Council briefing. At the briefing, he emphasised the key role of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in promoting international security and protecting humanity from the dangers of chemical weapons. He also underlined the importance of joint efforts to rid the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Ruwaiei called on the international community to support the Syrian Arab Republic at this critical stage, noting that Syria's security and stability are essential for regional stability. He urged support for the Syrian government and the OPCW, so they can complete their work and close the file on chemical weapons, highlighting Syria's initiatives to meet its obligations to the OPCW.
Al Ruwaiei commended the close cooperation and ongoing coordination between the Syrian government and the OPCW under Security Council Resolution 2118. He noted Syria's transparency and credibility in handling the chemical weapons issue and its steps to restore its regional and international role and advance political reform.
He reiterated Bahrain's support for Syria's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, rejecting foreign interference, and emphasised that Syria's security and stability are crucial for the region. He added that international support for Syria during this transitional phase is essential for an organised and smooth political transition in line with Security Council Resolution 2254.
