Amman: Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, chaired the 165th Ordinary Session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level. The meeting was attended by Arab foreign ministers and Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Dr. Al Zayani expressed gratitude to Jordan for hosting the meeting and emphasized the importance of intensified consultation to enhance Arab solidarity, safeguard regional security, and promote stability and development in light of current regional circumstances.
Dr. Al Zayani addressed the repercussions of Iranian attacks on Gulf Cooperation Council states and Jordan, which involved missiles and drones targeting civilian areas. He condemned these actions as violations of international law and the UN Charter. He also highlighted Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which disrupted maritime navigation and had economic impacts, stranding around 20,000 seafarers.
Dr. Al Zayani welcomed a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran to end the war, seeing it as a positive move toward de-escalation. He stressed the need to respect regional sovereignty, ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and address threats to Arab security.
The Minister praised U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to promote regional peace and stability and acknowledged the mediation roles of Pakistan and Qatar. He announced the Arab leaders' mandate to appoint Nabil Fahmy as the next Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, starting next month.
Dr. Al Zayani commended outgoing Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit for his leadership, diplomatic experience, and dedication to Arab causes. He highlighted Aboul Gheit's cooperation during Bahrain's hosting of the 33rd Arab Summit.
Dr. Al Zayani reiterated Bahrain's commitment to joint Arab action and pledged to work closely with the League's General Secretariat under its new leadership to address regional challenges effectively.
The ministerial council concluded with the approval of Nabil Fahmy's appointment as Secretary-General and the appointment of heads for the League's overseas missions.
