Jakarta:The Kingdom of Bahrain has successfully maintained its Tier 1 ranking for the ninth consecutive year in the US Department of State's annual report, which evaluates the efforts of 188 countries in combatting trafficking in persons. This ranking signifies Bahrain's commitment to developing a comprehensive framework to address trafficking, aligning with international standards and best practices.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Nibras Mohammed Talib, Chief Executive of the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and Chairman of the National Committee for Combatting Trafficking in Persons, stated that Bahrain's achievements in this area are a testament to the leadership of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. These efforts have bolstered the development of legislation, policies, and initiatives, reinforcing the Kingdom's efforts in this field.
The LMRA Chief Executive emphasized that Bahrain's sustained Tier 1 ranking reflects its effective national framework for combatting trafficking in persons. This framework includes advanced legislative and regulatory measures, mechanisms for prevention, protection, and redress, as well as strong national and international partnerships. Through these initiatives, Bahrain continues to build upon its accomplishments and adapt to the evolving challenges associated with trafficking as a transnational crime.
Efforts to improve the working environment and protect the rights of all parties have been central to Bahrain's approach. This has involved ongoing reviews and updates to legislation, regulations, and procedures in line with changes in the labour market. Bahrain has aligned its laws with international conventions, enhancing protection through the Expat Protection Centre, which offers preventive, advisory, and legal services, as well as shelter for victims and potential victims.
The National Referral Mechanism serves as a framework for coordinating national efforts, identifying victims, and providing essential assistance and protection until their reintegration or voluntary return. Bahrain's labour market framework also includes proactive monitoring tools to detect workplace exploitation and mechanisms to ensure workers receive regular wage payments through verified financial institutions.
Bahrain's anti-trafficking strategy operates on two fronts expanding national partnerships and building capacity through the Regional Centre for Training in Combatting Trafficking in Persons, and strengthening cooperation with international organizations, UN agencies, and civil society groups. These collaborations enhance expertise exchange and coordination in addressing trafficking's transnational nature.
Nibras Mohammed Talib acknowledged the contributions of various ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Waqf, in supporting and showcasing Bahrain's efforts globally. He reiterated the National Committee's commitment to fostering collaboration among government entities and civil society to further elevate Bahrain's standing in combatting trafficking in persons.
