Bahrain’s Ombudsman Institution Celebrates Role in Promoting Governance and Human Rights

Manama:Marking World Ombuds Day, Ombudswoman Ghada Hameed Habib emphasized the significance of good governance, human rights protection, and public trust in administrative systems. These principles have been championed by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and are central to Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, aimed at establishing justice and the rule of law.

According to Bahrain News Agency, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa has actively supported efforts to enhance governmental efficiency. The Ombuds Office acts as a vital communication channel between individuals and state institutions, fostering integrity and transparency.

The modern Ombudsman Institution in Bahrain is guided by international human rights standards, including the Venice Principles, which outline the importance of independent oversight bodies. These principles, endorsed by the United Nations, stress institutional independence, investigative powers, and confidentiality in complaint processes.

The Ombudswoman noted the importance of public awareness and trust in complaint investigations, necessitating ongoing development of investigative tools and data protection. The establishment of the independent General Secretariat of Grievances in 2013 marked a pivotal development in Bahrain's justice system, providing oversight and accountability.

Bahrain is the first Middle Eastern country to establish a national Ombudsman body with full independence, tasked with overseeing reform and detention centers. Its transparency and international cooperation efforts underscore a commitment to oversight and legal integrity.

World Ombuds Day underscores the role of oversight institutions in governance and human rights protection. Bahrain's framework draws from both traditional and modern standards, promoting accountability through objective investigations and solutions.

The Ombudswoman acknowledged the support of national entities, particularly the Ministry of Interior, Public Prosecution, and other government bodies, for their cooperation in strengthening justice and the rule of law in Bahrain.
