Bahrain Delegation Attends 218th IPU Governing Council in Tanzania

Manama:Bahrain's Parliamentary Division delegation, led by Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, participated in the 218th session of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which was part of the 153rd General Assembly of the IPU held in Tanzania.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the session covered several key topics including proposals for electing the President of the 153rd IPU General Assembly. It also reviewed reports from the IPU President and the Secretary-General regarding the Union's activities from the previous session and discussed strategies for implementing the Union's plans for 2027-2031.

Additionally, the Governing Council addressed the IPU's financial status and the proposed consolidated budget for 2027, along with proposed amendments to the IPU Statutes and Rules. Membership and observer status matters were considered, and the implementation of the 2026 priority topic, Respect for Human Rights, was reviewed. Initiatives related to the 2027 priority topic were also discussed.

The council examined the schedule of upcoming international parliamentary meetings as recommended by the Executive Committee and discussed the appointment of two internal auditors for 2027. Discussions also included mechanisms for electing the IPU President and elections to the Executive Committee. Reports from IPU committees and bodies, as well as outcomes from the Union's specialized meetings, were also presented.
