Riyadh: Bahrain has actively participated in the 4th UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence 2026, as Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, Chief Executive of the Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA), represented the nation. The event, held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from September 14-17, gathered ministers, senior officials, experts, policymakers, and specialists in the field of data and artificial intelligence.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Qaed took part in a high-level ministerial session titled "Five Years of the Recommendation: Where We Are, Where We Go Next". This session focused on the progress in implementing UNESCO's Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. Discussions also covered capacity building in ethical AI governance, as well as institutional, technical, financial, and policy aspects, along with UNESCO's Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM).
Al Qaed emphasized Bahrain's achievements in AI readiness as part of the nation's comprehensive development process, led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and guided by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. He acknowledged the role of General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, and Chairman of the Ministerial Committee for Information and Communications Technology in advancing national initiatives to build an integrated AI ecosystem.
The forum highlighted how UNESCO's methodology allowed Bahrain to assess its national AI readiness effectively, identifying areas of strength and those needing further development. This assessment has been pivotal in setting priorities for the future, particularly in enhancing data and knowledge infrastructure, governance, national capabilities, and awareness for responsible technology use.
Al Qaed outlined the progress and initiatives taken by Bahrain in developing national data infrastructure, strengthening AI knowledge, and supporting inclusive education. He also noted efforts to improve skills, raise public awareness, and enhance the capacity of the public sector to leverage emerging technologies.
He stressed the significance of cross-sector cooperation and research into the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence. The focus is on transitioning from assessment to practical implementation through effective governance frameworks, capacity building, and initiatives that deliver sustainable impacts.
Bahrain's involvement in the ministerial session underscores its dedication to contributing to international discussions on ethical AI governance. The nation aims to benefit from international experiences and best practices to fortify its national readiness while continuing to advance government work and serve the community using artificial intelligence technologies.
