Manama: The regional workshop on "Responsible AI Governance in Arab Countries", organised by the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), in cooperation with the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and in partnership with the Arab Organisation for Information and Communication Technologies, concluded after two days.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the workshop brought together representatives of governments, national human rights institutions, regional and international organisations, UN agencies, the private sector, and civil society. The sessions examined national experiences in AI governance, the development of a comprehensive Arab regulatory framework, and mechanisms to monitor responsible AI governance, including indicators, reporting, and accountability tools.
The discussions focused on the importance of translating principles into practical measures and developing a coherent, rights-based Arab approach to AI governance. This approach aims to promote transparency, accountability, non-discrimination, participation, and inclusion, while considering the region's priorities and diverse contexts.
The workshop concluded with recommendations to strengthen regional cooperation and the exchange of expertise. It emphasized the need to develop practical human rights-based frameworks, build capacities, enhance monitoring and accountability mechanisms, and expand partnerships among relevant stakeholders. These efforts aim to support responsible innovation and keep pace with rapid developments in AI technologies.
