Manama: Bahrain has issued a stern condemnation against the recent surge in terrorist attacks executed by the Houthi militia, backed by Iran, targeting Saudi Arabia. This includes an attempted drone strike on the holy city of Makkah on the evening of September 15, 2026, which was intercepted by the Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain underscored that this assault mirrors a prior attempt in 2017 and underscores a pattern of targeting sacred sites rather than being an isolated incident.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the ministry labeled these actions as violations of international law, humanitarian law, and several key charters including those of the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. These acts are seen as a direct affront to the sanctity of the Grand Mosque and the sacredness of Makkah, which holds profound significance as the direction of prayer for Muslims worldwide.
The statement highlighted Bahrain's unwavering solidarity with Saudi Arabia, pledging full support for all measures taken by Saudi authorities to protect their sovereignty, security, and citizens. The ministry also emphasized that the stability of Saudi Arabia is intrinsically linked to Bahrain's national security. Commending the Saudi Armed Forces for their readiness and swift response, Bahrain called on the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and its members to adopt a unified stance against the attacks on Islamic holy sites.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain urged the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action to cease recurrent Houthi attacks targeting civilian and religious sites in Saudi Arabia. The ministry appealed for the enforcement of Resolution 2817 (2026), which seeks to end support for proxy groups, thereby enhancing regional and international security and safeguarding holy sites.
