Manama: The Kingdom of Bahrain chaired the 67th meeting of the Arab Senior Officials Committee on Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, held at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo on 20-21 July 2026. The event gathered 33 representatives from 16 Arab countries, with Bahrain's delegation led by Brigadier Samir Ahmed Al Zayani, who is the First Vice-Chairman of the National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons of Mass Destruction and a representative of the Bahrain Defence Force.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Brigadier Al Zayani, in his opening remarks, emphasized the significance of continued Arab coordination and consultation amidst evolving developments in disarmament and non-proliferation. He highlighted the necessity for unified Arab positions in regional and international forums, referring to recent Iranian attacks against Bahrain, several GCC member states, and Jordan as violations of international law and the United Nations Charter that jeopardize regional security and stability.
The committee addressed its agenda, which included preparations for the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), coordination of Arab positions on disarmament and non-proliferation issues, and efforts to establish a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. Other matters of common Arab interest were also discussed.
The meeting underscored the Arab states' commitment to enhancing coordination on priority issues to support shared interests and efforts aimed at bolstering regional and international peace and security.
