Marrakech: Hanan Mohammed Fardan, member of the delegation of the Parliamentary Division, participated in the fourth Marrakech Parliamentary Economic Forum for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf Region. Fardan presented a paper addressing the impact of climate change on food security.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Fardan emphasized that Bahrain has prioritized food security and environmental sustainability under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. These priorities are reflected in integrated policies and programs aimed at enhancing food security systems, diversifying supply sources, improving natural resource management, and supporting modern agricultural technologies.
Fardan highlighted the alignment of Bahrain's programs with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and international climate commitments. She noted the growing impact of climate change on global food systems, citing issues like declining agricultural production, desertification, water scarcity, and extreme weather events that challenge sustainable food security.
She underscored the need for integrated policies combining climate adaptation with enhanced food production and the importance of cooperation between Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf countries. Fardan suggested investment in agricultural technology, infrastructure development, scientific research, and improved resource management as priorities.
Fardan also emphasized the role of parliaments in developing legislative frameworks that support food security and sustainability, encouraging modern technology investment, and overseeing climate adaptation strategies. She concluded by stating that addressing climate change's impact on food security requires coordinated efforts at national, regional, and international levels.
