Customs President Highlights Strategic Achievements in Customs Affairs

Manama: Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa, President of Customs, expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, who continues to be the primary supporter and guiding force behind Customs Affairs at all levels.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Shaikh Ahmed commended the exceptional efforts of Customs Affairs personnel in both security and customs domains, highlighting their high level of professionalism in carrying out their assigned duties. These efforts have significantly impacted the strategic objectives of Customs Affairs and enhanced its regional and international standing.

The remarks were made in a statement marking International Customs Day, observed annually on January 26, under the theme "Customs protecting society through vigilance and commitment." Shaikh Ahmed noted the pride of Customs Affairs in the achievements it has realised over past years, commending the dedication of its personnel in maintaining its high standing.

He explained that during 2025, Customs Affairs achieved several qualitative accomplishments. These include the Customer Service Centre receiving the Platinum Category Award under the Government Service Centres Evaluation Programme (Taqyeem), the Land Ports Customs Service Centre receiving the Gold Category Award, and the Unified Customs Clearance Centre also securing the Gold Category Award.

Shaikh Ahmed highlighted that Customs Affairs has kept pace with rapid developments in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in its services. AI solutions are used in data analysis to identify patterns and trends in customs information, flagging shipments or transactions requiring deeper inspection. These applications reduce manual intervention and focus efforts on high-risk cases.

He added that statistics on seizures at customs ports during 2025 indicated approximately 8,141 cases of confiscations and violations, with the largest proportion involving the smuggling of narcotic substances, tobacco products, and counterfeit goods.

Shaikh Ahmed also noted the expansion in granting the status of Gulf Cooperation Council Authorised Economic Operator (AEO), with 39 companies in Bahrain and 817 accredited companies across GCC countries obtaining this status. He emphasised that Customs Affairs is committed to building the next generation by equipping it with professional skills and customs knowledge to support Bahrain's standing.

He noted that this progress is achieved through aligning Customs Affairs' plans with the Government Action Programme 2023-2026, relevant Sustainable Development Goals, and World Customs Organisation policies. This alignment aims to enhance customs operations and sustain achievements.

Shaikh Ahmed confirmed that the implementation rate of the Customs Affairs Strategy for 2024-2027 has reached 56.9% as of January 2026. The completion rate started at 13% in 2024, rose to 47% in 2025, and is expected to reach 100% by the end of the strategy period.
