South Korea and Trkiye Strengthen Ties in Defence and Nuclear Energy Sectors

Seoul: His Excellency Lee Jae Myung, President of the Republic of Korea, and His Excellency President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Republic of Trkiye recently held a summit where they committed to enhancing economic cooperation in the defence, nuclear energy, and biotechnology sectors.

According to Bahrain News Agency, President Lee conveyed his aspiration to fortify the bilateral strategic partnership, aiming to develop it into a forward-looking and mutually beneficial relationship. He cited Trkiye's Altay main battle tank programme, which utilizes South Korea's K2 tank technology, as a testament to the collaborative ties between the two nations.

President Lee also emphasized South Korea's advanced nuclear energy capabilities. This is part of the effort to support the state-run Korea Electric Power Corporation's bid to participate in Trkiye's upcoming nuclear power plant project in Sinop, located on the Black Sea coast.

Furthermore, the leaders agreed to enhance strategic cooperation in new areas such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies.

On the sidelines of the summit, South Korea and Trkiye signed three agreements, including a memorandum of understanding concerning nuclear energy cooperation between Trkiye's TUNAS nuclear energy company and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).
