Manama: Kareema Mohammed Al Abbasi, Secretary General of the Shura Council, highlighted the council’s achievement of ranking first in the Arab world and 13th globally in the World e-Parliament Report 2024 issued by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The report evaluated 115 parliaments across 86 countries and recognised Bahrain’s efforts in digital transformation under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Abbasi underscored the Shura Council’s commitment to advancing digital transformation in line with Bahrain’s national strategies led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. She noted the development of various digital systems and the integration of artificial intelligence into the Council’s legislative work, enhancing efficiency and legislative outcomes.
The secretary general highlighted initiatives such as electronic meeting management systems, a parliamentary data lake, and a cloud-based
legislative platform, which facilitated the council’s uninterrupted operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. These systems ensure secure and seamless data exchange, high levels of transparency, and improved legislative support services for Council members.
Al Abbasi noted the alignment of the council’s efforts with the 10 key features of effective digital parliaments identified in the report. These include strong digital infrastructure, data quality, cybersecurity, emerging technologies, and stakeholder engagement. She noted that the council has also adopted global best practices for strategic leadership in digital transformation, including fostering innovation, investing in skills, and ensuring high-level commitment to digital initiatives.
She commended the dedication of the Shura Council’s staff, particularly the Information and Communication Technology Department, for their innovative efforts in enhancing institutional efficiency and supporting the transition to a fully digital parliament.
