Accra:Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine, has announced a new date for simultaneous presidential and legislative elections, now set for September 11, 2027. This decision overrides a previous plan for legislative elections on November 28, 2026.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the change was based on a decision by the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), as reported by the Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA). The decree calls for elections to be held across Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, allowing Palestinians to elect their President and members of the Palestinian Legislative Council directly and freely.
The revised election date follows national consultations that identified obstacles to the previously planned schedule. The decree highlights the importance of elections as a means to renew the democratic legitimacy of Palestinian institutions and to promote national unity.
The Central Elections Commission (CEC) has been tasked with ensuring the electoral process is conducted with integrity and transparency, covering all Palestinian territories.
