Tehran: Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is set to visit the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Monday, as announced by Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei on Sunday, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported, citing the state news agency.
According to Nam News Network, the visit by Munir and the accompanying delegation aims to bolster bilateral cooperation and build on Pakistan's efforts to help strengthen peace and security in the region, as stated by Baqaei in remarks carried by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). During the trip, Munir is expected to engage in discussions with senior Iranian officials.
Pakistan has played a significant role as a mediator between Iran and the United States, maintaining close contact with both sides throughout the ongoing conflict. On June 17, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding and initiated negotiations towards a final agreement. However, these talks encountered obstacles due to disagreements over security guarantees and the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy supplies and trade.
Between July 8 and July 24, tensions escalated as the US and Iran exchanged military strikes. The US launched attacks on targets inside Iran, while Tehran responded by striking US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
