MoFA Undersecretary meets UNODC, UNIDO

Manama, Foreign Affairs Ministry Undersecretary,Dr. Shaikha Rana bint Isa bin Daij Al Khalifa, met the Executive Director of the United Nations (UN) Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Director-General of the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV), Yuri Fedotov, during her official visit to the United Nations (UN) Office in Vienna.

Dr. Shaikha Rana expressed her desire to strengthen the existing cooperation between the two sides, especially with the National Committee on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction, commending the role played by the United Nations Office on Crime and Drugs and its efforts to combat organised crime and international terrorism, which includes drug trade and its use, the analysis of emerging trends in crime and justice, as well as the assessment of national needs and early warning measures, such as the increasing frequency of terrorism and the control of the occurrence of weapons of mass destruction by terrorists.

Fedotov expressed his pride for the great role played by Bahrain in supporting the UN and its affiliated agencies, especially the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, praising the efforts of the Kingdom and its pioneering role in various fields, at the regional and international levels.

Dr. Shaikha Rana also met with the Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), LI Yong, and commended the prominent role played by the UN Industrial Development Organisation in promoting economic development, and its tireless efforts in the area of global globalisation, environmental sustainability and poverty reduction programmes.

Fedotov noted Bahrain’s signing of the Strategic Partnership Framework Agreement between the Kingdom of Bahrain and United Nations agencies in a step that supports the Government’s Plan of Action 2015-2018 and is in line with Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, which affirms the keenness of the Kingdom to continue coordination with the UN and UNIDO, in order to reach the objectives of sustainable development.

LI Yong welcomed Dr. Shaikha Rana and expressed his appreciation for the efforts exerted by Bahrain to achieve the goals of sustainable development, stressing the keenness of the UNIDO to improve the level of coordination with Bahrain, wishing the Kingdom further progress and prosperity.
