iGA Engages in 15th OIC-StatCom Session on Women’s Role in Statistics

Jeddah:The Information and eGovernment Authority's Deputy Chief Executive for Statistics and Population Registry, Mrs. Duaa Sultan Mohamed, participated in the 15th Session of the Statistical Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC-StatCom) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The event gathered heads and representatives from national statistical offices of OIC Member States, alongside regional and international organizations.

According to Information & eGovernment Authority, the session covered strategic areas such as the next phase of the OIC Program for 2026-2030, updating population and housing statistics, and enhancing data sources and statistical systems.

Mrs. Duaa Sultan delivered a statement on behalf of women leaders of national statistical offices, underscoring the need to bolster women's participation in the statistical field. She advocated for empowering female professionals and facilitating knowledge exchange among OIC Member States' national statistical offices. Her address emphasized adopting successful practices to develop official statistics and implementing measures to increase women's representation at various levels in the statistical domain.

Key recommendations from the session included enhancing the monitoring of women's representation in national statistical offices through comprehensive career pathways involving training and mentoring. It was suggested to incorporate female professionals in succession planning, offer leadership experience opportunities, and expand technical cooperation and twinning areas.

Additional recommendations involved organizing a specialized meeting to promote women in statistics before the Commission's sessions, creating a regional network of women statistical experts, and providing speaking and session chair opportunities for female professionals within the OIC-StatCom action plan for 2026-2030. This aligns with the Organization's action plan for Women's Advancement and the Islamabad Ministerial Declaration.

Mrs. Duaa Sultan also highlighted Bahrain's efforts to advance statistical work using digital transformation, advanced technologies, artificial intelligence, and administrative data to produce statistics and indicators. She noted the efforts to enhance datasets and facilitate data exchange among government entities to improve the efficacy of statistical work.

The Deputy Chief Executive reiterated Bahrain's dedication to continuous statistical cooperation and expertise exchange at regional and international levels, aiming to reinforce the role of data and statistics in supporting sustainable development, decision-making, and policy and program development.
