Guatemala city: An intermunicipal bus veered off a road in Guatemala and plunged into a deep ravine, resulting in the deaths of 15 passengers and injuring at least 19 others. Authorities announced a three-day period of national mourning following the tragic incident.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the accident occurred on Friday night near the town of Totonicapan, along the Inter-American Road. Rescue workers faced a challenging task, taking over two hours to retrieve the bodies from the crash site and assist the injured passengers. Currently, 15 individuals are receiving medical treatment in local hospitals.
Road accidents are frequently reported in Guatemala, a country characterized by its mountainous terrain and often lax transportation regulations. Many towns and cities are connected by narrow, two-lane roads, which contribute to the frequency of such incidents.
In October, the National Transportation Safety Observatory, a government agency, reported that 446 public vehicles had been involved in accidents in 2025. These incidents have led to 111 fatalities and have injured more than 600 people as of October.
