Abu dhabi: Yasser bin Ibrahim Humaidan, Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs, participated in the 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), held under the theme "Powering Humanity: Renewable Energy for Shared Prosperity".
According to Bahrain News Agency, the minister emphasized Bahrain's dedication to its national energy transition programme, which aims to enhance the sustainability of the electricity and water sectors, reduce emissions, and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The Kingdom is planning to increase the share of renewable energy in electricity generation to 20 percent by 2035.
Humaidan detailed several key renewable energy projects, such as the 100-megawatt Al Dur Solar Power Plant, which is anticipated to be operational by the third quarter of 2026. He also mentioned a 150-megawatt independent solar power project currently underway and the expansion of distributed solar systems, which are expected to reach approximately 500 megawatts within two years.
The minister highlighted the significance of regional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and digital transformation. He affirmed Bahrain's support for IRENA's efforts to advance clean energy solutions and stressed the importance of developing national expertise through training and partnerships with academic and research institutions.
In his concluding remarks, Humaidan reiterated Bahrain's commitment to international collaboration through IRENA to tackle energy and climate challenges and to support sustainable development.
