Manama:MP Ali Saqr Al Doseri took part in a panel discussion titled "United for Safe Online Policy for Parliamentarians" during the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The session was led by MP Hassan Ibrahim Hassan.
According to Bahrain News Agency, MP Al Doseri emphasized Bahrain's comprehensive legislative framework aimed at addressing digital threats and protecting both individuals and data. He referred to Law (60) of 2014 on Information Technology Crimes, which criminalizes illegal acts via technological means, and Law (30) of 2018 on Personal Data Protection, which governs the handling of personal data and ensures privacy rights.
MP Al Doseri underscored the necessity of a secure online environment for parliamentarians, stressing that digital security is now crucial for parliamentary functions and political participation. While digital platforms have enhanced communication and public engagement, they have also introduced risks such as threats, abuse, defamation, and privacy invasions.
He pointed out the need for balance between protecting parliamentarians and maintaining public debate and freedom of expression, with measures against unlawful digital targeting. He noted the additional risks faced by women parliamentarians, including gender-based targeting and the misuse of AI to create fake content, which call for effective response mechanisms.
Furthermore, MP Al Doseri highlighted the role of parliaments in crafting legislation, reinforcing protection measures, and promoting awareness to tackle digital risks. He also stressed the importance of parliamentary codes of conduct, rapid reporting systems, and securing digital communications and data for parliamentarians.
