Bahrain’s Customs President Highlights Trade Resilience at Rome Conference

Rome:Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa, President of Customs, participated in an international conference in Rome, focusing on the 'Hormuz Crisis and New Eurasian Trade Routes.' The event drew customs chiefs, international organization representatives, and economic experts to discuss modern customs policies and trade resilience.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Shaikh Ahmed detailed Bahrain's strategies for navigating geopolitical challenges and logistical disruptions. He emphasized the proactive measures taken by Customs Affairs in collaboration with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to enhance supply chain resilience and maintain trade flow.

The President explained that alternative shipping routes, such as Jeddah Islamic Port in Saudi Arabia and ports in Oman, have been utilized to ensure the delivery of shipments to Bahrain. Overland transport routes have facilitated the movement of goods, circumventing regional disruptions.

Shaikh Ahmed highlighted operational measures like prioritizing shipments from Authorised Economic Operators (AEO) and appointing liaison officers for improved coordination and information exchange. He stressed the importance of GCC customs cooperation to ease truck movements and reduce border congestion.

Additionally, Shaikh Ahmed underscored the significance of strengthening trade relations between GCC and European countries. He pointed out that trade with European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries amounted to approximately BHD 68.7 million, or EUR 163 million, in 2026, despite existing challenges.

He advocated for enhanced cooperation between GCC and European customs through electronic data exchange and mutual recognition of AEO programs, aiming to fortify trade corridors and support supply chain adaptability.
