Manama: The Parliamentary Division of Bahrain took part in the Inter-Parliamentary Union's Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs meeting, which was a part of the IPU's 151st General Assembly. The primary focus of the discussions was on enhancing transparency and accountability in the selection process of the UN Secretary-General.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the Bahraini delegation at the meeting included Dr. Bassam Ismail Al Binmohammed, a Member of the Shura Council, and MP Mariam Al Dhaen. Dr. Al Binmohammed emphasized the need to modernize the election procedures for the UN Secretary-General to ensure they are fair and balanced. He acknowledged the competence and leadership shown by past holders of the position but noted that challenges remain in aligning the interests of individual nations with the UN's broader objectives.
Dr. Al Binmohammed reaffirmed Bahrain's dedication to peace and the significant role international bodies, especially the United Nations, play in fostering global stability and sustainable development. He also highlighted the necessity of ongoing reforms within the UN system to improve its effectiveness and reach in serving the global community.
