Accra:The Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions, chaired by Bahrain's National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), has issued a statement condemning recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. These attacks targeted civilians and civilian infrastructure, including aviation facilities, resulting in casualties and damage.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the network described such targeting of civilians as a grave violation of fundamental human rights, notably the rights to life, security, and safety. These actions are in direct contravention of international human rights and humanitarian law, which aim to protect civilians during conflicts.
The network emphasized the importance of adhering to principles of distinction and proportionality under international humanitarian law to prevent harm to civilians. It called for accountability for these violations and justice for victims, stressing the importance of preventing future attacks. The protection of civilians and respect for human rights are deemed essential for achieving security and peace.
This statement comes as Bahrain's NIHR leads the Arab Network, which includes 17 national institutions from the Gulf Cooperation Council and other Arab countries. The network aims to develop unified human rights positions on regional issues, advocating for adherence to international standards and the protection of civilians.
