Cairo: Al Azhar Al Sharif has issued a strong condemnation of the Islamic Republic of Iran's continued military actions against its neighbours, notably targeting the Gulf states, including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. The religious institution also expressed concern for other affected neighbouring and Arab countries such as Jordan, Iraq, Trkiye, and Azerbaijan.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Azhar has called for Iran to immediately cease its aggressive actions in accordance with Islamic principles, urging the nation to respect the sovereignty of the affected states and to protect innocent civilians uninvolved in the conflicts. The statement emphasized that such attacks are contrary to the tenets of Islam, which safeguard life, property, and human dignity.
Al Azhar highlighted that the targeting of residential areas, airports, hospitals, and energy facilities in non-combatant countries represents a grave violation of international humanitarian law, violating Islamic teachings that prohibit harm to the innocent. The institution reiterated that Islam mandates the protection of lives, property, and the honour of all Muslims.
Furthermore, Al Azhar underscored the necessity for Iran to halt its military operations, avoid further escalations, and engage in peaceful resolution efforts. By doing so, Iran can contribute to safeguarding civilians, preserving regional security and stability, and adhering to both Islamic and international laws, as well as respecting the sovereignty of other states.
Additionally, Al Azhar expressed support for the Egyptian leadership's efforts to cease military operations in the region. It appealed to the international community to assume its responsibility to end the hostilities, urging a prioritization of wisdom and dialogue to prevent conflict escalation and ensure civilian protection.
In a gesture of solidarity, Al Azhar conveyed its condolences to the families of victims in the affected regions, offering prayers for the deceased and wishing a swift recovery for the injured.
