Bahrain Delivers GCC Statement on Veto Use at UN General Assembly

New York:Bahrain's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, delivered a statement on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states during a General Assembly meeting. The focus of the statement was on the use of the veto, which was part of the Assembly's 81st session. The GCC states emphasized the importance of bolstering the role of the UN General Assembly to address veto use, promote transparency, and support efforts to reform the Security Council to enhance its capability in maintaining international peace and security.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the statement referenced the adoption of General Assembly Resolution 76/262 in 2022 as a significant measure towards reinforcing the Assembly's role concerning the veto. It highlighted the pressing need for a firm international response to Iranian attacks that target GCC states, which challenge the principles of the UN Charter. The statement also noted the significance of Security Council Resolution 2817, which underscores the Council's obligations in safeguarding international peace and security.

Furthermore, the statement pointed out the failure to pass a draft resolution on the security of waterways and freedom of navigation, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, due to the exercise of the veto. This incident underscores the necessity of enhancing dialogue and bridging differences among nations to tackle regional and international challenges collaboratively.
