UAE Authorities Manage Oil Tanker Leak and Continue Environmental Remediation

Umm Al Qaiwain:UAE The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority, and other relevant federal and local authorities to secure the oil tanker GEM NO. 2. Efforts are focused on mitigating risks and ensuring maritime safety following an incident in UAE territorial waters.

According to Bahrain News Agency, specialized technical teams are actively working to address the technical issues of the tanker. This includes repairing damaged sections, restoring some operational systems, and assessing the vessel's structural integrity to determine the safest course of action.

The latest field assessments indicate that no new oil leakage has been detected from the tanker. Continuous maritime and aerial monitoring operations, supported by satellite imagery, are in place to closely observe the situation and identify any developments.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has stated that its technical teams are addressing marine pollution caused by the oil spill in coordination with relevant authorities. Surveying, monitoring, and cleaning operations are ongoing in affected coastal areas, with public safety as a primary concern. Satellite imagery as of Friday, October 30, showed the oil slick concentrated off the coast of Umm Al Qaiwain, extending towards parts of Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, and Sharjah. Pollution levels have significantly decreased, and containment and remediation efforts are primarily utilizing mechanical recovery methods and chemical dispersants, following international standards.

Temporary closures of several beaches and coastal areas are in place as a precautionary measure to protect public safety and the marine environment while allowing remediation operations to continue. Fish and food products in local markets remain safe for consumption, reflecting the effectiveness of the UAE's food security system.

Etihad Water and Electricity has assured that drinking water safety is a priority, with proactive measures in place to monitor seawater quality, test water production, and ensure compliance with standards before distribution. These measures will not affect water supplies to consumers.

Authorities emphasize the continuation of field operations and national coordination, utilizing all available resources to ensure maritime safety and protect the marine and coastal environment.
