Manama: Dr. Abdullah Abdullatif Abdullah, Permanent Representative of Bahrain to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva, delivered a statement on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries during the general debate under Item 4 of the agenda of the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council.
According to Bahrain News Agency, In the statement, the GCC countries reaffirmed their position on recent developments in the region and the events that have raised concerns over the security and stability of GCC states and the safety of civilians. They stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in relations between states as the only means of overcoming the current crisis and safeguarding regional security and the safety of its people.
The GCC countries underscored their commitment to their security and stability, emphasising the importance of respecting states' sovereignty and territorial integrity, upholding the principles of international law and the UN Charter, and avoiding steps that could further escalate tensions or expose the region's security and stability to additional risks.
The GCC countries also strongly condemned repeated attacks by the Houthi militia against Saudi Arabia, including attacks targeting cities, civilian facilities and critical infrastructure using missiles and drones, including the latest attempted drone attack targeting Makkah.
The GCC countries stressed that the attempt constituted a grave violation of the sanctity of the holy sites and disregard for the safety and security of pilgrims, citizens and residents, as well as a provocation to Muslims around the world. They described it as a serious escalation and a direct threat to the security of Saudi Arabia and the stability of the region.
