Manama: The Council of Representatives and the European Parliament held a joint meeting, chaired by MP Hassan Eid Bukhamas, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee, and Reinhold Lopatka, Chair of the European Parliament's Delegation for relations with the Arab Peninsula.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the meeting focused on enhancing cooperation mechanisms and establishing practical and sustainable partnerships. Key areas of discussion included cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, critical infrastructure protection, joint investment opportunities, renewable energy, and food security.
MP Bukhamas emphasized the significance of Bahrain's relationship with the European Parliament and the European Union under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. He highlighted that parliamentary dialogue serves as a direct channel to strengthen partnerships in development, legislation, and parliamentary diplomacy.
He also underlined the critical role of parliamentarians in maintaining security and stability, ensuring the free movement of trade and freedom of international navigation, and adhering to international law and the law of the sea.
Additional topics of discussion included the potential exemption of Bahraini citizens from Schengen visa requirements and the development of political, economic, and cultural relations. Both parties expressed a shared interest in enhancing the investment and tourism environment between Bahrain and EU member states.
The European Parliament delegation appreciated Bahrain's policy of moderation, openness, tolerance, and peace. They acknowledged Bahrain's support for enhancing security, establishing regional and international peace, condemning Iranian attacks, respecting international law, and ensuring free trade and navigation, especially through the Strait of Hormuz.
The delegation also praised Bahrain's significant developments in human rights, and its efforts regarding women, youth, and children, noting that these advancements contribute to strengthening European-Bahraini parliamentary dialogue and cooperation.
