Manama: The Chief Prosecutor of the Terrorism Crimes Prosecution announced that the High Criminal Court has convicted a defendant of endorsing Iranian terrorist attacks against the Kingdom of Bahrain through social media, sentencing him to five years in prison. The court also imposed a fine of BD2,000 and ordered the confiscation of related seized items.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the conviction followed a report from the Cybercrime Directorate at the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security. The report identified a social media account that contained images, videos, and comments supporting the Iranian attacks against Bahrain. Investigations led to the identification of the individual operating the account.
The Public Prosecution launched an immediate investigation upon receiving the report, which involved questioning the defendant, hearing witness statements, and assigning technical experts to examine seized electronic devices. The examination confirmed the defendant's involvement in the acts attributed to him.
Based on the findings, the Public Prosecution referred the defendant to the High Criminal Court. The court, after several sessions during which the defendant was provided with all legally prescribed guarantees, including the right to a defense, issued the conviction.
The Public Prosecution emphasized that while freedom of opinion and expression is protected by law, social media use must adhere to legal regulations and not threaten national security or stability. It reiterated that publishing material that endorses or justifies terrorist acts is a legal offense, threatening national security and social peace.
The Public Prosecution urged citizens and residents to use social media responsibly, contributing to the security and stability of the Kingdom.
