Manama: Ahmed bin Salman Al Musallam, Speaker of the Council of Representatives, visited the historic Manama Municipality building. Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, and Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs, were present.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the visit aimed to view the building following its rehabilitation, carried out in implementation of the high royal directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to preserve the historical and cultural identity of Bahrain's buildings and cities, and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to preserve the building's historical character and cultural identity.
The building is one of the landmarks bearing witness to the history of municipal work in the Kingdom. The Speaker reviewed the rehabilitation works carried out at the building, including efforts to preserve its historical character and highlight its original architectural features, enhancing its status as one of the landmarks associated with the history of municipal work and urban development in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
He also toured the municipal exhibition, where he reviewed the documents, artefacts, and archival materials on display, which document the stages of development of municipal work and services, and the expansion and progress they have witnessed over the past decades. Al Musallam affirmed that the directives reflect the high level of attention given to national landmarks that document the Kingdom's institutional and development journey. He emphasised the importance of preserving this national heritage and introducing current and future generations to it, as well as to the continuous development of municipal services that have contributed to serving the community and supporting the development process.
For his part, Minister Al Mubarak affirmed that the visit embodies the shared interest in preserving the national memory and highlighting the significant milestones in Bahrain's municipal history, which, over more than a century, have formed a key pillar of urban development and community service. He noted that the rehabilitation of the building represents a model of integration between preserving the urban and historical identity of cities and continuing to develop municipal services in accordance with a sustainable development vision. He also affirmed that constructive cooperation between the executive and legislative authorities constitutes an important pillar in translating citizens' needs and aspirations into quality initiatives and projects that contribute to developing and enhancing the efficiency of municipal services and supporting urban development across the Kingdom of Bahrain's governorates.
In December 2025, HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister inaugurated the Manama Municipality building following its rehabilitation. The building was opened in 1962 by His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the late Amir, and is one of the institutional landmarks associated with the history of municipal work in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The beginnings of municipal work in the Kingdom date back to the establishment of Manama Municipality in 1919, during the era of the founder of the modern state and the leader of Bahrain's institutional renaissance, His Highness Isa Al Kabeer, Ruler of Bahrain and its Dependencies.
