New delhi: Professor Marike Patrani Paulsson, Secretary General of the Council for International Dispute Resolution of the Kingdom of Bahrain, took part in a panel discussion at the 4th IBA India Litigation and ADR Symposium, held at the Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi, under the title: "Privacy, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act".
According to Bahrain News Agency, she joined a group of speakers in a session titled: "Privacy, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act: Where is freedom of expression on the one hand and the regulation of social media on the other?" The Symposium brought together senior judges, policymakers, legal practitioners, and technology experts to explore the relationship between personal data protection, digital governance, and fundamental rights. It included a programme addressing developments in digital law and human rights, allowing participants to discuss challenges and opportunities and present proposals for advancing the field regionally and internationally.
During the session, Professor Paulsson highlighted the importance of principled, rules-based regulatory approaches capable of responding to technological realities, and reviewed Bahrain's efforts to strengthen its position as a legal centre for resolving complex disputes in a digital world.
The session featured contributions from His Excellency Justice Karia, Manjaree Chowdhary, Tejas Karia, Rahul Narayan, and other practitioners, who shared views on India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, global approaches to digital privacy, and the role of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution in resolving disputes from data breaches and online speech.
The Council's participation in this Symposium reflects Bahrain's commitment to strengthening cooperation with international institutions, exchanging best practices in digital law, and contributing to discussions and policy-making at advanced levels. It also continues Bahrain's role in supporting a legal environment based on the rule of law and providing a framework for handling international disputes, enhancing its presence in specialised regional and international platforms.
